The UK drugmaker Pfizer has launched a trial for its erectile dysfunction treatment Viagra in the UK.
The impotency drug, whose patent had been due to expire in the UK in April, is set to be launched in the US this week.
Pfizer has just received final approval from the US Food and Drug Administration for the launch of the first-ever trial for the impotency drug.
The launch will take place over a three-week period.
The UK's first-ever trial for the drug is scheduled to be launched in March.
The drug, which is made by a British company called Takeda, will be the first pill to treat erectile dysfunction, which affects nearly 1 in 10 men in the UK. The drug also helps to relieve pain in men who suffer from post-menopausal osteoporosis, the most common form of breast cancer.
Pfizer has launched two treatments to treat erectile dysfunction - Viagra and Levitra - in the past.
However, the company has said it would only be up to the US FDA to conduct a second one-off trial.
Pfizer has been working on a trial for the drug which has been under way since early March.
On March 26, a UK court ordered Pfizer to stop marketing it.
However, on June 5, a jury found that Pfizer had not marketed the drug in the UK.
A spokesman for Pfizer said: "We have taken all appropriate measures to ensure that our products are used appropriately and appropriately.
"Our products are safe and effective and we will continue to work with the UK regulatory body to ensure we remain available and competitive in the market."
The trial is expected to be released in due course.
The drug, which is made by the British drugmaker Pfizer, has just been launched in the US.
Pfizer, whose patent is still at the end of July, has already had to approve its Viagra treatment, but will now only be able to launch the treatment if the FDA approves it.
Photograph: Andy Lutnick/UK Daily MailPfizer's Viagra launch has been a success for its British subsidiary, which owns the drugmaker's patent, but is facing challenges in the US from some UK companies.
Pfizer says it has been taking measures to ensure the drug is used safely, but that the company's products are not being used as a "product of competition" - that is, it is being used as a "product of the industry".
Pfizer, which will still be able to launch its Viagra treatment in the US on March 26, is expected to launch in Britain later this year.
Pfizer is still keen to make the drug a first-mover marketer, but that is less likely in the US, where it is the largest market.
Pfizer has already been working on a trial for its erectile dysfunction treatment, Viagra.
It will be launched in the UK on March 26. Viagra, which has been available to buy for almost a decade, will only be available to men under the age of 18.
However, the drug has been available in other countries, including Germany, Italy, France, and Spain.
Pfizer is also developing a trial for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, called PDE5i.
It is currently set to be launched in the US this year.
The company also has a trial programme in the US, with hopes of launching in Europe in the spring of 2016.
The US trial programme is already under way, with the FDA to announce its results in early May.
Last month, Pfizer announced it would stop marketing its Viagra drug and would instead launch its Levitra drug.
In January, a court ordered Pfizer to stop selling the erectile dysfunction drug and to pay royalties to a third-party seller. The drug will remain on the market until the patent expires, but could then be sold.
The drugmaker has already faced competition from several drug companies including Eli Lilly, which has just been allowed to sell its erectile dysfunction treatment Viagra in the UK.
Pfizer is trying to get the drug to the US market, but could face a "disruptive" court battle if the company fails to win the case.
Pfizer has been trying to get it to the US market since the launch of the drug.
